Behind the Scenes at Ballpark Day of Faith
Faith, Baseball, and Brats: Bob Simi & Patty Kujawa’s Conversation
On the Strength Training for the Soul podcast, founder Bob Simi traced today’s Ballpark Day of Faith event back to an impromptu 12-pack, a Smokey Joe grill, and a last-minute invite to a young seminarian. Faith talk came as naturally as baseball chatter, and Bob sensed a calling: combine sports and spirituality in a way regular folks could embrace.
A “Called & Gifted” workshop confirmed Bob’s charisms of leadership and evangelization—even if the latter felt daunting at first. Tailgating was the non-threatening bridge: lead people where they already love to gather, then let the Holy Spirit handle the rest.
What began as “Take a Priest or Catholic Educator to a Baseball Game” evolved into Ballpark Day of Faith, complete with:
-
Brats, beer and community during a 90-minute tailgate
-
A ceremonial first pitch—often by a religious sister in full habit
- Outdoor Mass under a giant tent. Bob admits the tent rental is pricey, but last year’s downpour during Mass proved its worth.
When the workload felt overwhelming, the late Dr. Mike Lovell, then Marquette University president, offered a decisive reminder: “We are not called to be comfortable; we are called to be faithful.” That moment still fuels Bob’s perseverance.
"God gives us what we need if we truly trust in Him," Bob said. "And he's given me fabulous board members and fabulous sponsors and volunteers... it's an opportunity to trust in the Lord."
